well, i went with my sister to her 70's decade high school reunion dinner. it was fun. neither of us or linda had ever been inside the syria mosque before. the shriners own it . they brought the 2 bronze sphinx from the old building in oakland when they built the new facility. i'm so glad. they are beautiful and have been pgh. landmarks for decades.
the place is HUGE and gorgeous. all of the round tables that sat 8 were done up in white linens with red napkins(school colors) the waitstaff(and there were a lot) had black dress pants and white tux shirts. there were enormous fresh flower arrangements everywhere.
there was a cash bar(and a VERY handsome bartender)
by the bar was a long long table with the appetizers. tons of shrimp, tons! and mini crab cakes and fresh fruit on long skewers, big pretzels with hot mustard and i forget the rest. i had fruit and a pretzel with mustard. i HATE seafood. so does my sister. linda was happy tho!
for dinner there was chicken and hand carved roast beef and penne pasta and steamed veggies, smashed potatoes, wonderfully crisp rolls and i think there was some other things but...

when i looked around while we had been at the buffet, the staff had set out the BEST chocolate cake in slices on plates on long tables by the doors.

oh my! it was the BEST cake i have ever had. layers of cake with chocolate mousse in between and on the sides and in big decorations around the edges, but the BEST part was that the top of the cake had been bathed in chocolate ganache before being decorated with the mousse!

if i had SEEN that BEFORE dinner, i would have skipped the food and had 2 pieces of cake!

the ballroom has a sunken square area and a stage to one side and there were tables down there as well. they had a slide show running before the dancing and it was funny to see old school pictures.

what was funnier, was to be in the ladies room(as i was)and listen to the conversations, " 8 p.m. is too LATE for me to be eating. i have to take my medication!" or

"i'm having another damn hot flash!!!"

of course there were some very snooty people there that were, very snooty in school
but there were some fun people there as well.

my sister and i left early and i got back home about 10 p.m.

p.s. that bartender mixed some hellaciously good white russians.
