The two cats who come and sleep in my bed get that flea/tick stuff on the backs of their necks once a month. The outside cats are outside cats and they don't. But we've had a lot of ticks just now -- I'm finding them on all the outside cats. When I find one, I part the fur so I can see it and pour a teaspoon or so of regular cooking oil on it -- and within 24 hours it just disappears. Cheap and easy and you don't run the risk of infection from leaving the nasty mouth parts behind.
