Gas industry group sues W. Pa. community Posted 9/19/2011 6:52 PM ET CORRY, Pa. (AP) — A gas drilling industry group says a western Pennsylvania community shouldn't be able to ban the dumping of toxic waste, and has filed a lawsuit on the issue. Columbus Township, about 30 miles southeast of Erie, tried to keep Marcellus shale drillers from dumping their wastes within its borders, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review http://bit.ly/oZd3qN reports Monday. The Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association, based in Marshall, claims in an Erie federal court filing that the ordinance prohibiting the dumping of toxic liquids that were not generated inside the township violates the Constitution's interstate commerce clause. The township passed the ordinance in August and amended it on Sept. 13.
