Shale gas fracking is ruining lives in our state
Jack Kelly has gobbled up the lines fed by the gas industry and unquestioningly repeats them verbatim in "Viva the Shale Gas Revolution" (Oct. 30 column). Shale gas is "abundant, safe, inexpensive and environmentally friendly." Tell that to the residents of Dimock, Bradford, Washington County and most recently Connoquenessing in Butler County who have lost their water, gotten sick from breathing the air, worry about their children and have seen property values drop by 80 percent.
Cheap gas, energy independence? Think again. This gas is shipped to the highest bidders in Europe and Japan. Foreign countries have already bought large interests in the leases of unsuspecting landowners.
Clean energy? For each well, thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals are dumped in 5 million gallons of fresh water; thousands of gallons of poisonous frack mud resurface, an enormous problem to dispose of; and fumes from hundreds of diesel trucks circulate around the clock. There are fumes from frack ponds and emissions of methane, benzene, toluene and other gases, not to mention the occasional spills and disasters. Factoring all this in, shale gas is dirtier than coal.
Mr. Kelly tries to falsely make this a partisan issue. It's not, and Republicans are indeed among the protesters, as they should be.
Mr. Kelly asks, "What's not to like?" A lot, actually. Talk to the people whose lives have been ruined by fracking right here in Pennsylvania.
