People who were politically conscious were hip, hence the name hippies. People with long hair that just did drugs were called stoners. People who had long hair and just had sex were called swingers. People who just liked hippie music and hippy fashions weren't "with it". You can't be a conservative hippy because our politics were as liberal as it gets. You could be any of these things and we'd love you anyway. But if you were uncool and made people uptight we'd ask you to split. And hippydom is still a hip thing. If you're hip that the establishment is a scam and you're not afraid to show it you're a hippie. Columbus didn't discover America, man. Open your eyes. Pot isn't bad for you. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. Anything else is a cop out. Don't try to reinvent what being a hippy was all about just to look cool. Be what you are man. If all you want is sex, drugs and rock and roll, that doesn't make you hip. The establishment lies, wants people to conform and be content with being brain washed. And the way to resist is to stand up, stand out and be counted. That's the whole hippy thing. Deeply political. Antiestablishmentarianism was just too long a word, brothers and sisters. Stay hip!
