Mary Hough :
The Treasury Department announced today that the Troubled Asset Relief Program, commonly known as TARP, has turned a profit for taxpayers.
TARP was originally introduced at the height of the economic crisis to stabilize banks and financial institutions that were at risk of collapse. It was part of a number of emergency measures, all designed to prevent a financial panic and stave off a second Great Depression.
Today, three financial institutions—Sun Trust Banks, Inc.; KeyCorp; Financial Institutions, Inc.—repaid a combined total of $7.4 billion to the Treasury Department.
...
While our overriding objective with TARP was to break the back of the financial crisis and save American jobs, the fact that our investment in banks has also delivered a significant profit for tax payers is a welcome development. We still have more work to do repairing the damage caused by the crisis and strengthening the recovery, but today is an important milestone in our efforts to recover taxpayer dollars as we continue winding down TARP.
A new study from the Treasury Department estimates that the full set of measures put in place during the financial crisis—TARP, support for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and other critical initiatives—will produce a combined profit of approximately $24 billion for taxpayers.

finished critiquing the essays- i always wish that we had enough funds to give money to everyone that applies.
well, ALMOST everyone-some kids just don't try. that's sad but it's how things are and how they always were. people are people.

been a busy busy morning. finished my article for world wide hippies and sent it in- then i noticed the mistakes i typed- drives me crazy. when i was a kid i thought i was stupid . then i figured out that i have an odd form of dyslexia. it is hard to discribe but i read some words wrong but not others just depends on whenever my brain decides to blip on me and rearrage letters or merge a word so the it doesn't make a word at all and i have to look at it 3 or 4 times till it's right. sometimes a word didappears in the sentance-sometimes not. then there is the little quirk with my typing. i type with the middle finger of my left hand and i have to look at the keyboard as i do it because i have no depth perception and my hand doesn't go where i need it to go on the keyboard- i can't touch my finger to my nose with my eyes shut either- i end up touching my cheek towards my ear even tho i could swear i'm aiming for my nose!
can't do much math to save my soul either. numbers move on me or disappear. columns shift back and forth.
why am i telling you this?
because they are all just some of the effects of NF1. and they are just stumbling blocks compared to what some of my NF friends are dealing with right now. i'm asking for prayers or good vibes or whatever suits you- for them as they or their kids are going thu chemo or dealing with being in grade school and going blind or dealing with the taunts of people who should know better just because they look different.
thanks.

Billy Bob and his John Deere
The Farmer Cletus is passing by Billy Bob's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old green John Deere.
Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left.
He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, he lets his overalls fall down to his hips revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.
Grabbing both sides of his shirt he rips it apart to reveal his stained tee shirt underneath.
With a final flourish he tears the tee shirt from his body and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.
Having seen enough Cletus rushes in and says, "What the heck are you doing, Billy Bob?"
"Jeez, Cletus, ya scared the snot out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob. "But me and the old lady been having trouble lately in the bedroom department, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor."
me- thanks bruce!

Friendship ~ None of that Sissy Shit
Are you tired of those sissy 'friendship' poems that always sound good, but never actually come close to reality?
Well, here is a series of promises that actually speak of true friendship.
You will see no cute little smiley faces on this ~ Just the stone cold truth of our great friendship.
1.. When you are sad ~ I will help you get drunk and plot revenge against the sorry bastard who made you sad.
2. When you are blue ~ I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.
3 When you smile ~ I will know you are thinking of something that I would probably want to be involved in.
4. When you are scared ~ I will rag on you about it every chance I get until you're NOT.
5. When you are worried ~ I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse it could be until you quit whining.
6. When you are confused ~ I will try to use only little words.
7.. When you are sick ~ Stay the hell away from me until you are well again. I don't want whatever you have.
8. When you fall ~ I will laugh at your clumsy ass, but I'll help you up.
9. This is my oath .... I pledge it to the end. 'Why?' you may ask ~ because you are my friend.
Friendship is like peeing your pants, everyone can see it, but only you
can feel the true warmth.
Send this to 10 of your closest friends (including the one who sent it to you).
Then get depressed because you can only think of 4.

saw boag sunday he's doing really great with his new hip. i know that one of these years i'll be getting one or both-hope i do as good as he did.

''America owes a debt of gratitude to such insightful Republican governors as Walker of Wisconsin, Kasich of Ohio, Snyder of Michigan, and Christie of New Jersey.
Were it not for them, many Americans – myself included – would still be thinking that today's state budget messes are mainly the product of a national economic crash caused ......by the reckless greed of Wall Street banksters and rich speculators, as well as the abject failure by political leaders to tax their super-wealthy campaign contributors in order to meet the growing needs in education and other essentials. Luckily, the GOP guvs have set the record straight by explaining that the budget woes are the fault of teachers who have health coverage and firefighters who get pensions.''

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, S...adness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,
"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder,
Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."

"I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Never will I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will enjoy today's happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not wine to be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown and reaped on the same day... and this I will do." ~ Og Mandino ~

yep- my peace sign flag came today! the old steeler flag took it bad tru the fall and winter so i went online to look for a new flag- i've had all different ones-squirrels-little kids-got that from UNICEF. dogs- a sun with a face and moon face.
but i was hoping to find a peace sign and most of the ones i found were-to me-too 60s groovy things- this one is more my style.
i also got my overalls in the mail-today was a GOOD day- i like mail-not bills- mail!
i had 2 very old pair- 1 i still have from about 6 or 7 years ago. victoria's secret- light faded blue-love em. but they are pretty beat-so i looked in the VS catalogue- HA! a HUNDRED DOLLARS-for OVERALLS??
so- i found these from the sportsman's catalogue for 20.00 dark blue, heavy denim. fit nice and comfy.
no- i don't hunt-but they have some really cool stuff in there- i bought a cast iron pie pan from there- it rocks!
like i said- been a good day!

me- this is a great site:
American Life in Poetry: Column 313
BY TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE, 2004-2006
Go for a walk and part of whatever you walk through rides back on your socks. Here Peter Everwine, a California poet, tells us about the seeds that stick to us, in all their beauty and variety.
Back from the Fields
Until nightfall my son ran in the fields,
looking for God knows what.
Flowers, perhaps. Odd birds on the wing.
Something to fill an empty spot.
Maybe a luminous angel
or a country girl with a secret dark.
He came back empty-handed,
or so I thought.
Now I find them:
thistles, goatheads,
the barbed weeds
all those with hooks or horns
the snaggle-toothed, the grinning ones
those wearing lantern jaws,
old ones in beards, leapers
in silk leggings, the multiple
pocked moons and spiny satellites, all those
with juices and saps
like the fingers of thieves
nation after nation of grasses
that dig in, that burrow, that hug winds
and grab handholds
in whatever lean place.
It’s been a good day.

AN OPEN LETTER TO CONGRESS CRITTER JOE WILSON
and the other republican fearmongers
Dear Mr. Wilson
I just received yet ANOTHER letter full of misleadings and down right lies about the president, sent here for my elderly mother. I sometimes wonder how you and your kind sleep at night knowing that you are trying to gain votes by frightening elderly people like my mom. But then, I remember just who you are and I wonder no more.
You know, I could just let you keep on sending these out except for 2 little things.
You see, my mother was a democrating committee woman for years and never changed her ideals and two,
my mother has been quite DEAD for a few years now and though I would be happy if you were wasting your OWN monies on mailing her. I am not thrilled about you and your collegues spending mine.
have a great day

tons of things to do round here but i'm moving sort of slow. feeling a bit of a sore throat. that could mean a cold coming on or a bout of GERD going on. it's hard to tell the difference at first. doesn't feel like a friday to me. i guess that's because last night i was out for a bit. think we will just stay home tonight. maybe order a pizza or chinese from hing wong's. maybe, just soup for me if this continues. hope it's just the GERD. the weather's finally breaking and i have things i want to start to do!
my little sweetie is on her antibiotics for strep. it's been going around-at least that's what i've been told.
at least the sun is shining and it's getting warmer. i may take the deer netting off of my rhodies this weekend.
