Egyptian fossil hunters discover remains of four-legged whale dubbed god of death
Palaeontologists in Egypt have discovered the 43 million-year-old fossil of a previously unknown whale species — with four legs — that would have been capable of walking on land as well as hunting in water. The newly discovered whale belongs to the Protocetidae, a group of extinct creatures that were part of an evolutionary transition as the mammals moved from land-dwelling herbivores to sea-dwelling carnivores over ten million years. The three-metre-long predator has been named Phiomicetus
