As a recognized scholar on the U.S. Constitution, the Second Amendment has been completely misconstrued to mean that all citizens have the blanket right to own a gun. This is pure nonsense. If you carefully read the amendment, it gives the stated intention of maintaining a well-trained militia. The Framers understood that if the ordinary citizens had weapons, the have-nots would take by force from... the haves.
In his "Federalist" essay #29, Alexander Hamilton wrote: "If a well regulated militia be the most natural defence of a free country, it ought certainly to be under the regulation and at the disposal of that body which is constituted the guardian of the national security...confiding the regulation of the militia to the direction of the national authority...(and) reserving to the states...the authority of training the militia". This, in short, means that the federal government possesses the right to regulate who gets guns, how many they can own, and under what circumstance.
Please understand that the U.S. Constitution was not a document of freedom, but one of control: To reign in the forces that had been unleashed during the American Revolution. For further details, please read historian Pauline Maier's seminal work, "From Resistance to Revolution" for details.
