Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in January. He said Sunday that the United States would hold off on imposing tariffs on China. Hours later, a trade official threatened the opposite.
Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics today:
  • After three days of talks with a visiting Chinese delegation last week, President Trump's ambitions for a multibillion-dollar trade agreement have, for the time being, shriveled. Deep divisions and ceaseless jockeying for influence in the White House's trade team are depriving Mr. Trump of a quick win on a cherished policy priority.
  • News Analysis: When Mr. Trump publicly demanded that the Justice Department open an investigation into the F.B.I.'s scrutiny of his campaign contacts with Russia, he inched further toward breaching an established constraint on executive power: that the White House does not make decisions about individual law enforcement investigations.
  • The White House brokered an agreement with intelligence and law enforcement officials that will allow Republican congressional leaders to view some of the most highly classified information related to the Russia investigation.
  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used his first major policy address to deliver a hard-line speech, in which he demanded that Iran change just about everything regarding its behavior on the world stage.
  • Hillary Clinton appears determined to play at least a limited role in the midterms, bolstering longtime allies and raising money for Democrats in safely liberal areas. Her husband has been all but invisible.
