hooray-the new sheets came today. i KNEW if i washed the old torn ones and remade the bed that the ups truck would show up and it did!
so, i washed the new ones and stripped the bed and remade it, can't wait til bedtime.
they are lilac, like the old ones but they are the stretchy jersey t-shirt material just like the jammies i bought last winter! PLUS, i got them at a grand price. regularly 80 bucks- for 23 bucks! there is much rejoicing in my house today!
me- check out the facts and figures-she's right:

Today, under pressure from the special interest group Club
For Growth, which has pledged to spend $24 million on the upcoming
elections, GOP leaders signed a petition to repeal health care benefits
and increase the deficit. When Republicans pledge to repeal health care
... reform, they are actually pledging to increase the deficit by more than
a trillion dollars over the next twenty years.

Who knew!?!?!
What is the main ingredient of WD-40 ?
Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main
ingredient of WD-40 is? Don't lie and don't cheat. WD-40. Who knew;
I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup. I got up very early one
Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around
the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over,
woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was
trying to figure out what to do.... probably nothing until Monday
morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told
him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint
beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I'm
impressed! WD-40 who knew? 'Water Displacement #40'. The product
began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to
protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians
at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the
project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound.. They were
successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair
Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken
East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40
that would hurt you... When you read the 'shower door' part, try it.
It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door.
If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle!
Then try it on your stove top…. Viola! It's now shinier than it's
ever been. You'll be amazed.
WD-40 uses:
1. Protects silver from tarnishing.
2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them
slippery.
5. Keeps flies off cows.
6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7. Removes lipstick stains.
8. Loosens stubborn zippers.
9. Untangles jewelry chains.
10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly..
17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use
WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem
to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get
them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of
marks.
19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed
quickly! Use WD-40!
20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super
fast slide.
21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of
handling on riding mowers...
22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them
easier to open..
24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as
well as vinyl bumpers.
26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans
28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles
for easy handling.
29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them
running smoothly.
30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other
tools.
31. Removes splattered grease on stove.
32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve
arthritis pain.
37. Florida s favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs
from grills and bumpers.'
38. The favorite use in the state of New York , WD-40 protects the
Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and
you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper
than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose.
Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for
fishing are not allowed in some states.
40. Use it for fire ant bites.. It takes the sting away
immediately and stops the itch.
41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the
mark and wipe with a clean rag.
42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has
washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate
the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is
gone!
43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace
the moisture and allow the car to start.
P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

i was ashamed as i watched some of the hearings yesterday. really, i thought we had come farther in our country and along the road of "christian" brotherhood but everyday someone lets me see that i was wrong. and, this is so wrong, especially because these men know that this woman is not a liberal by any means of the definition. she is far more towards the center than i prefer.

i am so very very proud of the owls club and the ladies auxiliary and the other members of the scholarship committee.
from 2001 til this last group of scholarships we have given out 53 for a total of $29,500 in $500.00 scholarships. that is a remarkable amount and i still can't quite wrap my head round it.
yesterday was the awards luncheon. we get to meet the winners and their families and hear them read their winning essays. then we had a lovely lunch prepared by the women of the ladies auxiliary. it went so nicely and as one committee member said in his closing remarks. seeing young people like these give hope for the future.(paraphrasing here)
he is right.
and a special "thank you" to a committee member's mother. mrs. filbert donated money for an extra scholarship this year in memory of her husband. what a wonderful way to honor his memory.

A Jack Daniels Fish Story
I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms.
Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass
Bait.
Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed
Him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I
Grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its
Mouth.
His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without
Incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake
With two frogs in his mouth.
Life is good
thanks cherie

The Light Wraps You
by Pablo Neruda
The light wraps you in its mortal flame.
Abstracted pale mourner, standing that way
against the old propellers of the twilight
that revolves around you.
Speechless, my friend,
alone in the loneliness of this hour of the dead
and filled with the lives of fire,
pure heir of the ruined day.
A bough of fruit falls from the sun on your dark garment.
The great roots of night
grow suddenly from your soul,
and the things that hide in you come out again
so that a blue and palled people
your newly born, takes nourishment.
Oh magnificent and fecund and magnetic slave
of the circle that moves in turn through black and gold:
rise, lead and possess a creation
so rich in life that its flowers perish
and it is full of sadness.

only 33 rigs would be affected by the moratorium. That's out of 3600 oil platforms operating in the gulf of Mexico. And these 33 platforms are NOT producing oil, they're only drilling. So that's less than 1% of all gulf platforms that would be stopped. Gov. Jindal says we need the oil that's coming from the gulf, the moratorium is not affecting any oil PRODUCING platforms.

said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
"But to me, that doesn't have an enormous amount of credibility, because when President Clinton left office, he left an annual surplus... At the end of [George W. Bush's] term, we had $9 trillion in debt."

Eisenhower said:
"Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense. We have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security alone more than the net income of all United States corporations.
"Now this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every Statehouse, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources, and livelihood are all involved. So is the very structure of our society.
"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and [it] will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

In a speech in Cleveland on Friday, President Richard Trumka said he heard working people, including some in his own family say that immigrants are taking our jobs and ruining our country. But workers should know better, he says. "When I hear that kind of talk, I want to say, did an immigrant move your plant overseas? Did an immigrant take away your pension? Or cut your health care?"

American Life in Poetry
BY TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE
Alicia Suskin Ostriker is one of our country’s finest poets. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey. I thought that today you might like to have us offer you a poem full of blessings.
The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog
To be blessed
said the old woman
is to live and work
so hard
God’s love
washes right through you
like milk through a cow
To be blessed
said the dark red tulip
is to knock their eyes out
with the slug of lust
implied by
your up-ended skirt
To be blessed
said the dog
is to have a pinch
of God
inside you
and all the other

Alicia Suskin Ostriker is one of our country’s finest poets. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey. I thought that today you might like to have us offer you a poem full of blessings.
The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog
To be blessed
said the old woman
is to live and work
so hard
God’s love
washes right through you
like milk through a cow
To be blessed
said the dark red tulip
is to knock their eyes out
with the slug of lust
implied by
your up-ended skirt
To be blessed
said the dog
is to have a pinch
of God
inside you
and all the other
dogs can smell it

Stone Villages
by Joseph Brodsky
The stone-built villages of England.
A cathedral bottled in a pub window.
Cows dispersed across fields.
Monuments to kings.
A man in a moth-eaten suit
sees a train off, heading, like everything here, for the sea,
smiles at his daughter, leaving for the East.
A whistle blows.
And the endless sky over the tiles
grows bluer as swelling birdsong fills.
And the clearer the song is heard,
the smaller the bird.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TOMORROW
these are 2 pictures- the beginning and the ending.
my parents wedding photo and my father holding his great granddaughter. very near the end of his life.
he changed a great deal in between those two pictures. not just physically but as a human being. from an extremely poor family raised in a small rural coal mining area with most of the good and most of the bad learned behaviors from that time and place.
he changed over the course of my life and became a loving grandfather and a doting great grandfather to my little sweetie.
he lived hard and died harder but underneath it all he had a big heart. too bad he was taught not to let it show. i was 30 years old before he really did. he learned- i learned.
happy father's day dad. i know you are somewhere raising hell- probably with john wayne-the world's greatest actor-according to you and who am i to disagree.
the new neighbors are moving more furniture in. the sound of their little girl laughing is nice. max tho-is just going goofy. he isn't used to anyone being there. the house was empty since before we got him. he barks at any sound and it's hard to get him to settle down once he starts up.
one of my other neighbors went to the nursing home to see the lady that owned the house til now. poor lady is in and out of reality and just wants to come back to her home here. i really enjoyed her and her late husband as neighbors. they were special, unique people.she graduated from an ivy league school way, way back when women were not supposed to desire an education.she and her husband had no children and were as close as close could be. after he passed she declined rapidly. it hurt just to see it. now, she's been fairly bedridden and often somewhere far away inside her memories.
now, there's a little girl laughing and life goes on.
